Angeline the Baker - Clawhammer banjo (string missing)
Переглядів 6784 роки тому
As I was tuning up to record this, the second string snapped. Nyl-gut strings take so long to settle after being replaced, so I decided to go ahead and record anyway. So here's Angeline the Baker in gCG-C tuning, with guitar playing the accompaniment.

This tune is also known as Duncan MacRae of Kintail's Lament. Originally a Scottish piece, it is now more commonly known by its Irish name. It is often played on bagpipes or harp. Played here on my Richwood Irish bouzouki with bouzouki backing.

Pull the Knife and Stick it Again/Wi' a Hundred Pipers - Tenor banjo
Переглядів 2,9 тис.7 років тому
Two jigs played on my Pilgrim Celtic Dawn tenor banjo. 'Pull the Knife and Stick it Again' apparently refers to a witch who terrorised Co. Clare. If you somehow managed to stab her, she would beg you to pull out the knife and stab her again to finish her off, but the second stab would actually save her. Wi' a Hundred Pipers commemorates Bonnie Prince Charlie marching into Carlise upon their sur...
Sí Beag, Sí Mhór - Tenor banjo

Turlough O'Carolan's famous waltz, played on my Pilgrim Celtic Dawn tenor banjo. Accompaniment is provided by bouzouki and my homemade low-D whistle. The title roughly translates to 'Little fairy hill, big fairy hill'.
Glenbeigh Hornpipe - Tenor banjo

I thought this would be a good tune to show off my new Pilgrim Celtic Dawn 2 tenor banjo. My cheap recording equipment and sloppy playing really don't do it justice! Guitar for accompaniment, with my Ashbury mandolin in the second run through.

The Musical Priest - Tenor banjo and mandolin
I'm wondering, is there an advantage to playing this song in CGDA tuning? Typical Irish banjo tuning is GDAE, and I'm curious why it's not used here.
Go raibh mhait agat
Which chord is it you play at the finish? Thanks
Love this tune, it’s one of those tunes where an auld country American farmer sits on his rocking chair and plays his banjo (not offending any American farmers young or old)
I play this on the tremolo harmonica. I like it much better on the banjo.
IN New York in the 1930s or so, there was a group called the Flanagan Bros and the one who played the banjo, I believe his name was Mike, had a short necked tenor banjo that he tuned up to DAEB. Another trad banjo player I knew had his tenor neck shortened by 2 frets so that he could tune the banjo up to DAEB. I have several short necked tenor banjos including some Gibson “Trap Door” banjos that were designed for musicians who were transitioning from mandolin to banjo so they were deliberately built with short necks. Although I use the GDAE tuning, the banjos I have could easily be tuned in the DAEB if that sound is desired.
I've played guitar for several years, but I just retired and wanted to try to learn the Irish Bouzouki which I absolutely love the sound of! At 69, my dexterity is not quite what it once was, but I got more time to learn now...I hope 😅.
Ive resisted tuning to gdad until today. I dont want to confuse my fiddle playing but wow what a great sound

Excellent lessons!
Please too much er er em em er er em em
Go watch something else then. Jeeze, me, me, me.
Just learning to play it on my fiddle 🙂
Lovely. Also known as The Humours of Tuamgreine and Toomgraney Castle.
Great playing!
Can I ask what bridge and tailpiece you used? Thanks
Congratulations! What scale length did you choose? What is the tuning? Thank you.
Just starting with my new Tenor Guitar tuned in GDAD and hopet to be able to sit in on a session before I move onto the harp. I'm finding your introductory lessons very useful and I hope your still teaching Bob - is there more you've done following these initial videos?
Barney used play this.
Great playing and a beautiful tone
Great content. Thanks so much. And the fookin theory is very useful.
Love it
That's great, thanks. Very helpful
Thanks a ton for uploading this
Just awesome !!!
Excellent 👍👍👍👍👍
Beautiful, thanks very much.
This is the best version i've heard, does anyone have a tab for it? i can't work it out myself, the tabs i found does match
You should trying slowing the video down to 75%. Works for me.
Brilliant. I play guitar in a Shanty band and not all the tunes are in C or G. Bought a chord book but find chords a bit difficult to hold down as neck is small and hands are big. Is there any way around this. Thanks .keep up the good work
I would look at a 12 string. Longer necks. Look at either an Epiphone Inspired by Gibson Hummingbird 12 string, or a Taylor 150CE. Both come under a grand. See if your local music store has any and try some out. The one that resonates with you the most is the one you should get. I hope that helps you out!
Well played
Could I buy that backing track anywhere?
The Irish tenor banjo is so much fun to play
Best version of Cooleys on UA-cam!
Lovly playing
Hi what make is your Bouzouki? Sounds great!
Are the bottom strings the same or an octave apart like a 12 strings guitar
I have mine tuned to the same note. Some people play with the G and low D pairs an octave apart. Makes it sound bright and jangly, I prefer the fuller bass sound of unison strings.
Supreme
Ive been playing the bouzouki with octave mandolin tuning. I dont want to confuse myself with fiddle. Im assuming i just use mando chords then
Excellent tutorial,thank you.
This tune wasn’t originally meant to be played syncopated/dotted, but it sounds so much better played that way 👍
I've started syncopating/swinging all the traditional songs I play on tin whistle and it's loads of fun. Then when going back to a straight sound, it helps with the time keeping a lot.
Daft question - what tuning best with Scots trad? I know guitar has standard and a few others (e.g. DADGAD) - what is best for bouzouki? it will be easier for me to pick up if it is a mandolin/fiddle reverse guitar tuning!
If you're playing anything with chords the GDAD is probably best. Gives you easy access to keys of G, D, and Em, and can be capoed up to 2 for A and Am. If you are just playing melodies and already know fiddle/mandolin tuning then you'll probably find it easier sticking to GDAE.
Brilliant performance. You have great talent. I've just started to learn this on the mandolin. Will go well with Harvest Home and The Boys of Bluehill
Nice ❤
Sounds great! Good job!
Wheredo u get backing tracks
just like good o'l Barney Mccanna once played rip.👍
Sounds a lot like Anne Louise instrumental by the longest johns
Awesome! My son is looking to build a string instrument for his 8th grade project (with a mentor). Wondering how many hours this took (approx)?
Any chance u could use the backing track for practice? Would u be able to send it on? Brilliant video BTW!
Beautiful
Thank you so much
